Getting started

Choose S1 or S2. Learners can create an account with their name, email address and a password of at least 8 characters. A longer memorable phrase is recommended. If the operator has enabled it, they can instead continue with Google or Microsoft and confirm the display name for their learning record. Returning learners use the same sign-in method they connected previously. Then use a recommended activity or choose any unfinished step. Difficulty is selected automatically; learners never need to choose a level.

Google and Microsoft sign-in only confirms identity. Maths Step does not request access to email messages, contacts, calendars or files. If an external email matches an existing password account, the existing password is required once before the sign-in method is connected.

If this browser contains progress from the earlier name-only version, creating an account with the same learner name and school year claims that saved progress automatically. Contact the operator if the older record was created in another browser.

Completing a step

A step needs three independently generated questions answered correctly in S1/S2, or five in S3 for deeper practice. A corrected retry counts once for that question, while repeated attempts on the same question never count more than once. Completing the required answers moves to the next recommended topic. The step card shows progress towards the required answers.

Practising completed topics again

On the Progress page, choose one or more topics under “Practise topics again”, then select “Reset selected topics”. Use “Reset all topics” only when the whole active path should restart. A confirmation appears before either reset. Resetting puts the completion count back to zero but keeps the detailed answer history. A signed-in administrator can perform the same reset for a learner from the private website maintenance area.

If an answer is wrong

The first incorrect attempt gives a strategy and a worked example with different values, plus a diagram where useful. If the second attempt is incorrect, the help becomes more detailed with an ordered scaffold for applying the method to the original question. The learner can then make a third attempt with the full learning support, without the current answer being revealed. If that third attempt is incorrect, the question closes and practice continues with a different question that the learner has not already answered. Progress records describe this as support provided; they do not claim that the learner viewed or used it, and receiving support does not reduce completion credit.

Troubleshooting

If password sign-in fails, check the email address, password and selected school year, or choose “Forgot your password?” to request a single-use link. For Google or Microsoft sign-in, start again and select the account previously connected to the learning record; a school administrator may need to approve access for managed school accounts. If an error persists, record what you selected and the time without including unnecessary learner information.
