S1 Rounding and Estimating

Rounding makes a number easier to use while keeping it close to its original value. Estimating uses rounded values to check whether an answer is sensible in S1 maths.

Worked example

Round 47.6 to the nearest whole number. The tenths digit is 6, so round up: 48.

Common mistakes

Look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to. Do not round each digit separately.

Helpful hints appear after incorrect answers, then you can retry the question. This is practice support, not a formal assessment.
