S2 topic guide
Ratio and Proportion
A ratio compares quantities, while proportion keeps that comparison equivalent when values change. It supports S2 maths practice based on Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence.
Worked example
Red and blue counters are in the ratio 2:3. If there are 10 red counters, multiply both parts by 5, so there are 15 blue counters.
Common mistakes
Scale every part of a ratio by the same amount. Do not add the same number to each part when making an equivalent ratio.
